Studentafton with Ingrid Betancourt

Our next guest coming to Studentafton will be Ingrid Betancourt on the 21st of May, 07:00 PM in the Great Hall of Grand Hotel. The Colombian politician and anti-corruption activist Ingrid Betancourt entered the field of politics in conjunction with her first anti-corruption campaign, which distributed condoms in order to enlighten that it is equally important to protect oneself from corruption as it is from HIV. She was elected to the Colombian Chamber of Representatives in 1994 and spent her time there eagerly debating the current President’s financial cooperation with one of Colombia’s largest drug cartels. Betancourt later became Senator of Colombia and started Partido Verde Oxígeno. When she ran for President of Colombia in 2002, Betancourt was kidnapped by the guerrilla organization FARC. At gunpoint she was forced further into the jungle, which she describes as six years of starvation, disease and mental terror. After Betancourt’s release in 2008 she has, on one hand, been praised all over the world, and on the other hand been openly criticized by fellow captives. On the 21st of May 2014 at 07:00 p.m. in Grand Hotel’s Great Hall Ingrid Betancourt will be visiting Studentafton to speak about her political career, her time in imprisonment and her view on South American politics.

Very much welcome,
